A Few Makeovers To Share~And Painting A Bedroom

Hello everyone! Yep.....I am looking forward to another weekend again! We are hoping it is nice out to do some yard work and so that I can get in the garage and do some sanding and painting on some projects for a friend of mine! I am anxious to get started on them but it hasn't been nice enough to get out there and do it.

Well I went back to the antique mall real quick on Tuesday night. I took my daughter with me and boy did she have a blast! She LOVES Little House On The Prairie and anything from "back in the day".....so she was in awe of all the treasures! It was fun to see! She found a ton of old old phones...and a big pump from a well...an old Victrola...the list goes on and on. Needless to say we both enjoyed ourselves! I was on a mission for Firkins....or "Firkin Like" Firkins!! And I found three that I thought would make great makeover candidates. I know, I know they aren't the "real deal" but hey..... they work for me. Here are my three finds before~

Here they are after~

The top mustard one...the metal bands on it look so shiny from the flash! The bands are not shiny. I wasn't real happy with the lighting on this picture. I have had this black iron stand FOREVER and I thought...hmmmm...four "Firkins"...four shelves on the stand...perfect! But now where does my stainless steel recycle can go? I guess it goes out to the garage!

I did another real quick makeover the other day on a small clock that I got at the Goodwill for $3.00. It was painted all black....very dusty. It needed some TLC. So here is what it looks like now~

It was black...then I painted brown over that and then a red topcoat....sanded it and put on a dark walnut stain. The photo doesn't show the detail real well...but it really brought out the grain in the wood. I am glad that I made "time" for this little makeover....o.k....sorry it's late and I am tired. Forgive my cheesy joke!

My next project is painting our bedroom. I am hoping to get started on this soon. I am keeping the same quilt as in the picture.

Not loving the window treatments...too matchy matchy with the quilt...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I need something new.

Now for paint samples...oh boy! I went looking and here is what I came home with! Yikes! Too many choices! My first instinct is to go mustard. That is what my gut is telling me. I love the blue color in the quilt...but I have NO other blue in my whole house...so that would be quite the change for me. Then I thought will all of those colors make the room too dark? See what I am struggling with here~

I think I have narrowed it down to these choices and I am really leaning towards the mustard. Not the darkest one but somewhere in the middle.

Close up of the quilt~

Oh it's all just in the planning stages right now..but I want it done yesterday!! I will have to think everything through. I am also painting the master bath...what do you all think...keep it the same color as the bedroom..or do a different complimentary color in there?? I know you don't have time to answer all my questions...but if an idea just jumps right out at you or you definetly have an opinion on something let me know! I would love the ideas... But, oh yea....if you don't like the quilt~~don't tell me...because it HAS to stay!! LOL!!! :)
Wow...this turned out to be a much longer post than I had planned! I was going to show you my fake firkins and call it a night! I guess I just got carried away! Thanks for stopping by, thanks for reading and thanks for leaving such nice comments. They are all very much appreciated!
And to my good friend Lisa..SO glad you are home! You get better soon.....because I have been missing your makeovers! :) Still praying for you to get stronger and stronger with every passing day!
Until next time. Take care everyone. ~Sarah~

  1. Hey there Sarah, why not paint one wall that pretty green in your quilt for the focal wall and the others in the mustard or that creamy yellow like color..I have my room painted a sage green on 3 walls and one red/autumn bronze color on the focal wall and white trim...it looks really nice...I would love to see photos of your bathroom to see what color to paint it...:) hope this helps..Love your fake firkins..they look really nice there on the stand...:)

  2. Hi Sarah!....I think I'm addicted to painting....I love redecorating!....we have painted every room in our house at least twice and some three times in the seven years we've lived here....and I'm getting ready to repaint the dining room and breakfast nook within the next couple weeks! LOL....just be sure you not only consider the colors in the quilt but also how the color looks with the wood furniture and flooring color in the room....sometimes you have to be careful with mustards that way....the color that jumps out at me in the quilt in the way of wall color is the lighter yellow so I would say if you choose mustard to go with a light one....there, that's my two cents! LOL Janet :)

  3. Hi Sarah,

Your firkins look great on your stand! You always find such great goodies! And your clock looks good as new...I mean old. You know what I mean. :)

I like the mustard color for your bedroom. But the blue is nice, too. It would be a soothing color for a bedroom.

  5. Ok, let me first of all say that I LOVE your firkins!! They look great and I am so jealous that you have so many (lol). I am obsessed with finding them now along with gameboards and cutting boards. Yep, a bad addiction indeed (lol).

I love your quilt and I think I would lean more towards the mustard as well. Can't wait to see it finished.

  6. Sarah, I just love the firkins.  You are so creative.  I love how you displayed them on the stand.  I have been looking for a stand like that forever to put my old bowls on. Do you remember where you got it?I think the mustard would look really good.  I have a mustard gold color in the upstairs bedroom.  It is called bungalow gold  (I forget who it is by but I got it at Lowes)  I can't wait to see the new bedroom!! Have fun!!Carla

  7. Love the firkins. The colors look great and the display shows the off well. The quilt on your bed is so pretty. I like the mustard colors with the quilt. A small check in gingham would look nice on your windows.

  8. It's funny. When I saw the quilt,I first thought mustard would look nice-even before I saw your samples and read your comment about mustard. Weird, huh? What about grapevine for the window treatments? Love your firkins-they look great. Have a good day.

  9. Hi Sarah,
I've enjoyed reading your blog for sometime now and love to see all your remakes. Love your "firkins"!
I like the mustard for the bedroom and I love your quilt. I also think some homespun curtains or toppers would look great on the window too.
Can't wait to see what you come up with.
    Have a great day.

  10. Ok about that quilt I love it! I think the mustard would look good go with your gut! I also like the curtains so I can't help you there. If you have a shower curtain to go with the mustard do it all one color so much easier. :)

I always love your redo's and the firkins look great.

  14. Sarah, What a buy you got on the carriage clock - $3.00! It looks great all made over. I sympathize with your agony over choosing the right paint color. Our DD (14) wanted to redo her bedroom this summer. She chose dark brown and blue, blue ended up being the wall color, I must say I was VERY hesitant, but it turned out beautiful. She is not a prim lover and that's fine, this is her room and she can have it how she wants, within limits. When she was done, I wanted to move into her room! Keep us posted on the painting. ~Ann

  15. Hi Sarah~

First of all, I just wanted to tell you how much I like your firkins. And the stand is even better. Very creative!! And that little clock...$3.00 seriously!?!?! I must be shopping at the wrong TS!! LOL!!

And as far as your bedroom...I am leaning towards the mustard. BTW, LOVE the quilt. It is absolutely gorgeous!!

    Hugs!! Carrie♥

  16. Sarah,
I love the firkins & the stand you have displayed them on. Love the quilt, the mustard color and the blues, but I'm a blue kind of gal, so I'm not much help. I would keep the window treatments simple, maybe some primmed up muslin or cheesecloth since you have the blinds already. Have a great weekend.

  18. I love how you painted your buckets and especially how you displayed them. I have been searching every thrift shop around me looking for some that I can re-do. No luck yet but I'm not giving up.

Your bedroom is going to look great. I think a nice green that is in your quilt would look great on your walls. I would use mustard color as an accent. Tea stained cheesecloth would also get my vote for the curtains.

Good luck and please post pics when you get your bedroom completed.

    Blessings,
    AMY

  19. I love firkins as well! They can get pricey and expensive to find though.:(

I have enough that I can stack them up and they go 6 ft tall in graduated sizes. I haven't used them in awhile though, they are in the attic for now.

  20. Definitely mustard. Mustard check or plaid homespun for curtains and dustruffle. Have you thought about teastaining the quilt to make it look older?
